Larry Norman

  Larry David Norman (* 8. April 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas, † 24. February 2008 in Portland, Oregon) Was a U.S.American Singer and Composer. He was considered one of the main pioneers contemporary Christian music.

Life

Larry Norman grew up in the black ghetto in San Francisco on and later explained that this was the reason why he with the traditional white Church could not start. He was a member of the Rockband People!. This band released its first record in 1968 and landed in the top 20 in the U.S. charts with the song I Love You. Norman left the band in 1969 and released his first solo album, Upon This Rock.

Norman was one of the first artists to serious modern music published with Christian texts. In his 1972 song released Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music German ( "Why the devil should have the only good music"), he laid a foundation for many other artists, in which he explained that one can very well live as a Christian and listen to rock or can even play. The text of the song is based on a quote from William Booth, Founder of the Salvation Army. Later, Norman was often called the grandfather of Jesus Rock known. Billboard called him the most important songwriter since Paul Simon. In 1972, Norman made his debut as an actor in the second part of The Blob. In the seventies, Norman produced the first album of his friend Randy Stonehill.
Norman founded in 1975 Record Label Solid Rock Records. This published Stone Hills Welcome to Paradise and albums by Daniel Amos, Tom Howard and Mark Heards Appalachian Melody. He barely survived a plane crash in 1978 and suffered severe brain damage, but healed completely after many years. During the next twelve years seemed not a studio album by him. Disagreement with his record company Word Records ended with the dissolution of the label Solid Rock Records 1980th Norman moved to Europe and founded the label Phydeaux. In 1990 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award of Christian Artists Seminar. That same year, he gave seven concerts in the legendary Moscow Olympic Stadium each with 35,000 spectators.
In 1992 he suffered a severe Myocardial infarction. An operation seemed futile because the doctors assumed that he had no chance of survival. A surgeon dared the operation, set up a new type of pacemaker, and Norman survived. Longer trips and performances were no longer possible for him ever since. On 24 June 2005 Larry Norman was officially his last U.S. concert in Salem (Oregon). As his health improved again, but this was followed by yet another official last concert, so once again in 2007 concerts in Europe. There, he met in Berlin and some of his last studio recordings, and sang with Sarah Brendel two songs for her album Early Morning Hours book. He last lived in Portland, where he died in February 2008 at the age of 60 years.
In 2001 he was the Gospel Music Association in Gospel Music Hall of Fame recorded.
